PROJECTS
BATÁN
Samborondón, Ecuador

The Samborondon highway that crosses Batan will be transformed into an elegant boulevard. The cross-thru traffic will be lead through the middle, and service lanes aligning each side will provide relief for local traffic at a more pedestrian friendly scale. Samborondon Boulevard will be lined with allees of trees that will aid in its character as a gateway to the Batan neighborhoods. Inspired by the flat topography and characteristics of the land, waterways will become the leitmotif of Batan. A network of canals and lakes will connect, secure and embellish the neighborhoods while functioning as a drainage system of the land. There will be one town center located along the north portion of Samborondon Boulevard. The town center will be mixed-use, offering a variety of housing, commercial and offices facilities, serving local residents, neighboring communities, as well as drawing from the region around. A much smaller neighborhood center will be located further south along the Samborondon Boulevard. Eight neighborhoods, more residential in character with a neighborhood center will be interspersed throughout the site. The neighborhood centers will offer commercial opportunities for the immediate neighborhood. Three of the neighborhoods offer a central green opening to the Daule River. The hill will remain rural, providing more secluded and larger lots for private homes in a village setting. A generous parcel north of the larger town center will be reserved for an educational campus. A marina on the eastern side will face the Babahoyo River and a Malecon will line the Daule River on the west. Nestled in between the town center and the Marina, is a large site reserved for a school site. The lush lake at the foot of the hills will be enhanced as a natural preserve and wild inlets left to nature. Civic sites will be reserved in all of the neighborhoods at the most prominent locations and will be defined in use as the community grows.
